Propane heater and portable tank question?

11 May

I now have an electric heating system however just bought one of those 15K / 30K BTU Comfort Glow blue flame propane wall mount heaters for emergency purposes just in case the electric was to go out. I would like to know if I can safely use a 20 lb propane cylinder tank (like a grill tank) outside for supplying the propane to this heater? Additionally, if I were to use this sized tank, how long would a full tank supply propane to the heater?

One last chance for CRF cat?

11 May

Hi- I’m sorry for posting on here again, but now I’m in a last-minute situation. I have consulted three of the yahoogroups for CRF cats, but haven’t found enough for this situation, and probably won’t get an answer in time. My Mom’s (and my childhood) cat, was diagnosed with CRF two weeks ago (she’s 15 years old). According to my Mom, her health has been peaking and plummeting rapidly in that time, and my Mom has come to a decision to have her put to sleep. Luckily, she’s waiting until I get there. Despite what I’ve tried to convince her of, she’s still feeding the cat generic canned food in all flavors, and grilling turkey with vegetable oil for her. I’m pretty sure this is mostly responsible for my cat’s ups and downs, but I now have only about sixteen hours from the time I get home tomorrow night (about 10pm) until 2pm the next day, to get the kitty back in good enough spirits to convince my Mom that all she needs is a good diet, and that euthanizing her is not necessary. She is in Stage 3 (not Stage 4, as originally thought) CRF, and all the vets my Mom has been to have told her that the only option is IV or euthanization. Other than the food she’s been getting, kitty has not been receiving any treatment. I’ve already bought some Wellness Chicken and Turkey flavored canned food, some Hills KD renal canned food, and some Hi-Tor Neo canned food to try out with her, but this was before her latest down turn. I was going to try bottle-feeding her a mix of water and adult cat formula to get some liquid in her, but I’m not sure if that’s a good idea or not (it’s low phosphorous, but I haven’t found any precedence for giving CRF cats adult cat milk for nutrition). I was also thinking about trying Renal K+ gel to get her Potassium up, but I’ve heard conflicting advise on this, especially for later-stage CRF cats. I’m pretty sure liquids and nutrients are the most important thing, but since this is literally a matter of life or death, I need absolutely the best advice. I don’t have access to a car, and they live in a remote area, otherwise I’d speed her to the nearest vet for an IV treatment and then explore my options. Please, please, please help. Even if it’s a little expensive, I’ll try it. I’m in NYC, and so have access to just about anything I’d need.

Charcoal grill questions?

10 May

I’ve just started using a charcoal grill. I have a 18 inch grill its nothing special but it gets the job done. Eventually i want to get a weber charcoal grill. Is there a place i can go online that shows me cooking times for meats, how often to flip the meat, how much charcoal briquettes to use? I seem to grill well when i use the three zone technique, but i heard for thick steaks you just need one layer of briquettes and get em nice and hot. Is that true?

How do you cook and prepare your burger to make it extra tasty?

09 May

Stovetop or outdoor grilling?
Charcoal, gas, or wood?
And what kind of wood – oak, mesquite, hickory, etc?

Do you flip the patty often, or just twice?

And how do you fix your buns?
A secret spice? The whole works?
Do you toast them, too?

Not a contest – just a friendly question to gather tasty ideas!
Shawn, that sounds fantastic!
phishfour, that’s good advice, and yea, worcestershire is a nice touch.
Sounds like that peanut butter guy likes to get his buddies to contribute to his burger.!

How to deal with Nagging control-freak Mother-in-law who lives with us?

09 May

I have a nagging mother in law that’s literally driving my wife and I nuts.

MIL’s a single parent to my wife (only child), and after my wife and I were married, she sold off her house, and moved into our new house to stay with us. When she did, she practically took over the whole house, either directly or through her nagging.

1) We’re discouraged from cooking in our own kitchen, because even when we clean up after cooking, she will clean up a second round while still nagging all the while. In the middle of a meal we just cooked, she would basically nag non-stop while we’re eating about the (obviously) yet uncleaned kitchen, turning a nice meal into a grilling session.

2) She nags at us whenever we’re in front of the PC, even when we’re doing work or just enjoying a movie with our kid, hence again disrupting whatever we are doing.

3) When our kid is acting up and does not want to eat on time, she nags at us about us being bad parents; even though when we asked her to give it a shot instead she fails miserably as well. Our “success rate” at getting our kid to eat is definitely higher.

4) When my wife is tired after a late night and decides to sleep in, she will march right into the bedroom to wake her up, even though she was specifically told not to do so. And then proceed to nag my wife until she has to get out of bed in frustration.

5) She nags at us to live more “spiritual lives”. She even once tried to calm our kid down by “commanding the evil spirits to leave her” when a simple hug by me calmed our kid down.

6) She believes hair must be blown dry via hairdryer after showering. Or you will get rheumatism. After showering off my kid, my wife usually hands her off to me to blow-dry her hair. Sometimes, my kid doesn’t feel like it and will begin to cry until she starts coughing and throwing up her last meal; in which case I just let her hair dry naturally after towel-drying. When my MIL finds out, she will nag us about it non-stop.

Some of the advice she dispenses do make sense in a way, but the way she goes about it (nagging with a raised voice and a pissed-off face), followed by mumbling that’s meant for us to hear (proven because she stops when we turn up the radio) only makes us irritated at her.

And she raises her voice when she does so too. (i.e. when my wife rushed out of the bathroom to get a new towel, she complains aloud well within hearing volume of the neighbors about her lacking modesty and running around the house naked. Even during showering she does it by raising her voice so that she can be heard over the running water.

And she never admits her mistakes. Once she insisted we were trying to feed our kid milk over the allowable 1-hr limit, but a quick check showed her timing was off. Asked her to look at the other clocks that were running properly, she refused to do so, saying that we must be wrong.

We tried talking to her about it, but she usually either gives us the brush-off by saying that she’s not nagging, or gets defensive.

Asking her to knock before entering the bedroom is a failure. Locking the door to keep her out too. She keeps knocking until my wife gives up and lets her in. Asking her to leave the bedroom does not work either. There was once when she even pounded the door until the locking mechanism had to be fixed.

Ignoring her does not work, since she then intensifies her nagging on my wife/her daughter until my wife gets frustrated to the point that she takes it out on me.

We even tried counseling, but MIL was always unconvinced of its effectiveness to begin with, since she’s convinced that counselors either do not know what they are talking about or do not have our best interests at heart.

My wife had bouts of depression before and I usually give way to her even some of her requests (the odd ones) obviously originated from MIL, to prevent her stressing out from having to choose sides. However, its not a good solution, and the situation is affecting our marriage. MIL knows about my wife’s depression, but that doesn’t stop her nagging. We suspect she’s taking advantage of that I obviously DO care to get her way indirectly.

Any suggestions? I’m really at wits end. I’m afraid that eventually our kid will suffer from having to “endure” MIL, but having such a thing on a kid’s psyche is not good. Even know at her age, (2 1/2), our kid will show an unhappy face and tell us that “granny’s noisy/loud”. I’m afraid that at this rate, either my wife will fall into depression again, and/or my kid suffers because of it.

New Gas Grill?

08 May

I can’t afford a Weber but don’t want a piece of junk that is going to rust away.
I had a Kenmore grill for 5 years and at the end of last summer died on me.
I put a lot of money into it replacing burners and the thermometer and various other parts.
Does anyone know of a good midlevel grill that will last some years if taken care of and covered properly.
I keep seeing uniflame and brinkman grills everywhere.
also what about charbroil and perfect flame charmglow?

Outdoor grilling in an apartment in NJ??

08 May

My apt does not allow gas grills. Charcoal grills must be 20 feet away from the building. Second floor cannot grill on the balcony. I understand this a fire prevention precaution. What do you think about an electric grill on the balcony??

What is your preference of starting a charcoal grill?

Some people like to either use lighter fluid, or electric charcoal heaters. My method is the charcoal chimney. I have a Weber brand charcoal chimney, and it works great.

Good Book On Pipe Smoking?

08 May

Are there any good pipe smoking books out there, that contain the nuts and bolts of smoking a pipe?

I’m a novice pipe smoker of 8 months, and I’m looking for a book on the mechanics of a pipe.

I’ve read several books about the history of tobacco, the history of pipes, where they came from, how it all started, health relationships to cigarettes and cigars, etc.

What I’m looking for now, is a good book that can teach me less about the history, and more about the actual pipe.

The parts of a pipe, a dissected anatomy, what parts are called, terms, tips on smoking, what happens when you do what, do’s and don’ts of pipe smoking, how to break in a pipe, little facts, pipe accessories, etc.

A book that’ll answer all the questions a pipe smoker would ask, while being a practical guide to pipes and pipe accessories. Illustrations appreciated :)

An example that keeps sticking in my mind, is if I was a smoke shop owner needing to learn anything and everything a new pipe smoker would ask, what book(s) would I read to have that knowledge base.

The closest book i’ve seen to what I want is called “Carl Weber’s The Pleasures of Pipe Smoking”, published in 1965. A bit out of date, but not much has changed since then.

Thanks in advance.

I cannot get my Weber grill going. Can you give me tips?

08 May

How much charcoal and how much lighter fuel do I use. How long do I let the coals burn before I slap the wings on?
What kind of charcoal and lighter fluid?
My grill is a black weber with a grid in the bottom and some kind of metal pan under there and a big round black lid.
Hope that helps you to help me figure this thing out.
Believe it or not….I am in a contest for chicken wings. They must have been desperate to ask me to participate.
