How do I build a fire pit?

01 Jun

I asked this quesiton before and got one pretty good answer. I just wanted to post in another category to see if anyone else has other input.

I live out in the country and would like to build a fire pit (like an outdoor fireplace) in the back yard that I would end up being able to grill/bbq on. Do I need to dig a little bit down in the ground first or do I just clear an area where I’m going to put it and start building?

Any important things I should know before building it?

What is best to use to fuel it once it’s built? Charcoal, kindling? Does it matter?

buy a fire pit kit dig a hole then put it in build a rock and brick wall around it to make it look nice and functional and make sure its not near any trees or dead leaves and the ground is usually dry in the area your building it!

pick a spot where you think tree roots will not be a problem, fires will spread through them a surface later, hours and days later

if roots present I would think of putting a gravel base in the bottom of the pit or old patio slabs if handy………..this will also create rain drainage and make it easier to start the fires

if building a brick structure to simulate a fireplace you will need some sort of foundation especially if in the colder climates where frost in the ground could shift things around

as far as the burn it depends on what your bbcueing, charcoal for taste but you could start it with kindling probably cheaper too!
